For example, when a country’s law system is very complex and requires lots of expensive lawyers, money spent on lawyers will count towards higher GDP, even though this is clearly not a good thing for the country and its citizens.正因为这样，波士顿咨询集团（BCG）发明了一种更好的方法来衡量一个国家的“可持续福利”的，这种所谓的“可持续福利”基于44个不同的指标，而人均GDP仅是其中之一。这些指标可以衡量失业率，通货膨胀，疾病的流行，国民预期寿命，教育质量和接受教育的权利，国家基础设施质量，环境状况，对腐败现象的控制，新闻言论自由等等。That is why The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) developed a better way to measure “sustainable well-being” of a country, based on 44 different indicators, and GDP per capita is only one of them. The indicators measure, among others, the rate of unemployment, inflation, prevalence of diseases, life expectancy, quality and accessibility of education, quality of infrastructure, state of the environment, control of corruption, press freedom, and much more.下面的图是根据波士顿咨询集团（BCG2016）2016年的年度报告得来的。为了便于比较，FEIS还给出一些其他主要国家的得分：美国83.7，日本81.3，巴西49.3，中国46.5，印度32.6。需要提醒大家注意的是克里米亚 （Crimea）未在地图上着色，因为它到底属于哪个国家迄今为止还不够明确，另外就是没有关于科索沃的数据。The following map is based on BCG’s 2016 report. For comparison, FEIS also show the scores of other major nations: USA 83.7, Japan 81.3, Brazil 49.3, China 46.5, India 32.6. Note that Crimea is not coloured in the map because it is not clear where it belongs, and that there are no data for Kosovo.
其实如果从语言学的角度出发，我们可以发现一个有趣的现象，那就是地图里得分较高的国家绝大部分是属于日耳曼语系的，比如满分的挪威，95的荷兰，93.6的德国，92.7的奥地利，91.1的瑞士等。而拉丁语系国家的得分则较为低一些, 比如83.1的法国，76的西班牙，70.6的意大利等。在整个欧洲得分最低的一些国家大多属于斯拉夫语系，比如54.6的俄罗斯，49.1的乌克兰，57.3的保加利亚等等。这不仅仅只是巧合吧！
